Crohn's Disease

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation within the GI tract – usually around the ileum and beginning of the colon. The inflammation can occur at any point in the digestive tract and may occur in multiple patches or in a single location. In most cases, people who suffer from Crohn’s Disease experience waves of symptoms called “flare-ups.” During these times, symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps, fever, fatigue and loss of appetite are all common.

The exact cause of Crohn’s Disease is not known, but anyone with a first-degree relative with a history of the disease may have a genetic pre-disposition to developing Crohn’s. Diet and stress factors may aggravate Crohn’s symptoms, but certain dietary changes and medications may help suppress GI inflammation and manage flare-ups.
